About Omace
India’s promise of honest weight
In India a scale has always carried more than weight. It carries a promise: what you pay for is what you get. Walk the old road with us, from the first standard weights of the Indus cities to the scales we make in Bagru, Jaipur, today.
c. 2600 BCE · Harappa, Mohenjo-daro and the Indus cities
The first standard weights
Traders of the Indus cities weighed with cubes cut mostly from chert, all to one standard. The small weights double, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, then step up in tens, and the same weights were used across the settlements. Their common unit weighs about 13.7 g.
Maan means a measure. It also means honour.

c. 300 BCE · Kautilya’s Arthashastra
A keeper of honest weights
The Arthashastra gives the kingdom an officer of weights and measures, the pautavadhyaksha. Traders paid a fee to have their weights stamped, anyone caught with unstamped weights was fined 27¼ panas, and false balances were punished.

Weighed with devotion
At Guruvayur, devotees sit on one pan of a great tula and offer their own weight in bananas, sugar, jaggery or coconuts. Kings did the same with gold and gave it away, the tulapurusha dana.
A story told across India: Satyabhama piled her gold against Krishna and the pan would not rise. Rukmini laid one tulsi leaf on it with devotion, and the scale came level.
Some things are weighed by love, not by gold.

Around 1500 · Sultanpur Lodhi, Punjab
Tera, tera: all of it is yours
Guru Nanak kept the stores of the Modikhana at Sultanpur Lodhi. As the story is told, while weighing out grain he reached thirteen, tera, the word that also means “yours”, and kept saying “tera, tera” as he gave it all away.

The goldsmith’s measure
From a seed to a tola
Goldsmiths weighed gold against gunja seeds, the ratti. The Arthashastra already counts five gunja seeds to a masha of gold. Today India still speaks of gold in tola, about 11.66 g, and our Ace jewellery scales read in tola.

Every town and mandi
The scale of dharma
In many towns the public weighbridge is the dharam kanta, literally a scale of dharma. India chose one national system of weights by an Act of 1956, in use from 1 October 1958, and today every weight and scale used in trade must be verified and stamped under the Legal Metrology Act.

Every Anganwadi, clinic and home
The first number of a life
Since 1975, Anganwadi centres have weighed India’s young children every month to watch them grow, and today they also measure them with infantometers and stadiometers. A newborn’s first weight, a mother’s check-up, a family’s health: we build our baby scales, infantometers, stadiometers and bathroom scales for these moments.
