What's in the box
- 1 × Infantometer main unit
- 1 × Adjustable sliding foot piece
- 1 × Instruction manual

Before you measure
- Remove the baby’s shoes, socks, hat, hair clips and any bulky clothing.
- Place the infantometer on a firm, flat table or the floor, never on a bed or sofa.
- Check that the foot piece slides freely and that the scale is clean and easy to read.
- If possible, have two people: one to hold the head and one to position the legs.
Usage (updated steps)
- Lay the baby on their back along the centre of the board.
- Gently hold the head against the fixed head piece, with cupped hands over the ears and the eyes looking straight up.
- Keep the shoulders, back and hips flat and in a straight line.
- With one hand on the knees, gently straighten both legs, toes pointing up.
- Slide the foot piece up until it rests flat against both heels, then lock it.
- Read the length at eye level and note it down straight away.
- Wipe the board with a mild disinfectant after each use.
Tips for an accurate reading
- Measure quickly and calmly, because a restless baby gives a less accurate reading.
- Take two readings and use the average if they differ slightly.
- Measure at about the same time of day for growth tracking.
- Plot the result on a WHO length-for-age chart, or share it with your paediatrician.
Precautions
- Never leave the baby unattended on the board, not even for a second.
- Always keep one hand on the baby so they don’t roll off.
- Don’t force the legs straight. If the baby resists, wait until they are calm and try again.
- Use only on a flat, stable surface.
- Not for babies or children taller than 100 cm.
- This is a measuring tool, not a diagnostic device. Discuss any growth concerns with a doctor.
Care & storage
- Clean with a soft cloth and mild disinfectant. Don’t use abrasive cleaners or solvents, which can fade the scale markings.
- Don’t immerse it in water.
- Store it flat in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Don’t place heavy objects on the board.
- Unlock the foot piece before storing.
Length vs height: why it matters
For children under 2 years, doctors measure length lying down, not standing height. Length readings are usually 1–2 cm more than standing height, so always record it as “length” when you use the WHO growth charts.

Frequently asked questions
What buyers ask about the ICDS-IFM infantometer.
What is an infantometer used for?
It measures the length of newborns and infants lying down, which is the standard way to track growth in babies under 2 years.
How do I measure a baby with it?
Lay the baby on their back with the head against the fixed head piece. Gently straighten the legs, slide the foot piece up to the heels, lock it and read the scale.
Why measure length and not height for babies?
Children under 2 are measured lying down. Length usually reads 1 to 2 cm more than standing height, so record it as length when you use the WHO growth charts.
Is it safe for newborns?
Yes. The ABS body has smooth, rounded edges and a wide non-slip base that keeps the board steady.
Can it be cleaned between patients?
Yes. Wipe the smooth ABS surface with a mild disinfectant. Do not soak it in water.
Can I use it for a child who can stand?
It measures up to 100 cm. For children over 2 who can stand straight, use a stadiometer or a stature meter.
Who is it suitable for?
Hospitals, paediatric clinics, maternity and child health departments, ICDS and government health programmes, health camps and parents at home.
