Installation

1. Choose a flat, vertical wall with a level floor below it, with no skirting board or mat underneath.
2. Pull the tape down until the zero mark touches the floor, keeping it straight.
3. Mark the position of the unit on the wall and fix it firmly with the screws provided.
4. Check again that the zero mark sits exactly at floor level.

Measuring

1. Remove shoes, hats and hair accessories, and loosen any hair buns.
2. Stand with your back to the wall, heels together and touching the wall.
3. Keep the heels, buttocks, shoulders and back of the head against the wall.
4. Look straight ahead with the chin level, not tilted up or down.
5. Gently pull the head piece down until it rests flat on the top of the head.
6. Read the height at eye level, then let the tape retract slowly.

Tips for an accurate reading

• Measure in the morning. Height can be about 1 cm less by evening.
• Take two readings and use the average.
• For children, record the reading and plot it on the WHO height-for-age chart.

Precautions

• Install only on a strong, flat wall, and mount it at the right height so the zero mark is at the floor.
• Don’t let the tape snap back. Guide it up gently to avoid damage or injury.
• Keep out of reach of young children when not in use.
• Not suitable for children under 2 years. Use an infantometer to measure them lying down.
• This is a measuring tool, not a diagnostic device. Discuss growth concerns with a doctor.

Care & storage

• Wipe with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth.
• Keep away from water, moisture and direct sunlight to protect the steel tape and markings.
• Don’t pull the tape beyond its full length or bend it sharply.
