Choosing a kitchen scale comes down to two numbers: capacity and step size. A digital scale that weighs up to 5 kg in 1 g steps covers most Indian home cooking and baking, and a 10 kg model suits families who weigh atta, rice or a big bowl of dough. Capacity: 5 kg, 7 kg or 10 kg?
Capacity is the most a scale can weigh, and the bowl counts towards it. Tare sets the display back to zero but adds no capacity, so a 1.5 kg steel bowl on a 5 kg scale leaves 3.5 kg for food.

- 5 kg for baking, daily cooking and portion control. The Hoffen KS-601 digital kitchen scale weighs up to 5 kg in 1 g steps on a black tempered glass top, with a large backlit display you can read from the side while you pour.

Step size: 1 g, 0.1 g or a spring dial
Step size, also called readability, is the smallest change the display shows. A 1 g step suits cooking and most baking, where flour, sugar, butter and dal are weighed in tens or hundreds of grams.
A 0.1 g step suits yeast, baking powder, spices, saffron and coffee, where one gram is a large share of the amount. The Hoffen digital spoon scale weighs up to 500 g in 0.1 g steps, with the display in its handle. For pour-over and espresso, the Hoffen KS-301 and KS-303 coffee scales read 0.1 g up to 3 kg and add a brew timer.

A spring dial needs no battery, but it is marked in coarser steps and read by eye, so small amounts fall between the lines. A digital scale shows the number directly.
Why grams matter in an Indian kitchen
India's own dietary guidance is written in grams. The ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition Dietary Guidelines for Indians (2024) set out a 'My Plate for the Day' for a 2,000 kcal diet in raw weights, with 300 ml of milk or curd alongside the foods below.

ICMR-NIN adds katori and spoon measures in its annexures, but a scale reads the raw weight directly. The guidelines also limit salt to 5 g a day, about one teaspoon or 2 g of sodium, which they give as both the Indian and the WHO recommendation.
Packaged food works the same way. The FSSAI Labelling and Display Regulations, 2020 require nutrition information per 100 g or 100 ml, with each serving's share of daily needs worked out on a 2,000 kcal diet and 5 g of salt. Weigh a 40 g portion of a snack labelled 500 kcal per 100 g and you have eaten 200 kcal.
Tare, units and display
- Tare. Put the bowl on, press TARE, add flour, press TARE again and add sugar. Only the new ingredient shows each time, so one bowl does the whole recipe. Honey, ghee and butter go straight into the bowl and nothing sticks to a measuring spoon.
- Units. The KS-601 shows nine units: g, kg, lb, oz, fl.oz, milk, ml, tl and ct. The KD-819 shows g, lb, oz and ml.
- Millilitres. Water weighs 0.99821 g per mL at 20 °C, according to the NIST Chemistry WebBook, so 500 mL of water reads close to 500 g. The KS-601 also has a separate milk setting.
- Display. A backlit display stays readable in a dim kitchen and under a large bowl. The KD-819 and KS-601 use a blue backlight; the Venus KS-305 shows bright white digits.
- Auto-off and warnings. The KS-601 switches itself off after 3 minutes and shows overload and low-battery signs.
Platform material and care
- Stainless steel. Flour, oil and turmeric stain plastic. The Venus KS-305 has a brushed stainless steel top that wipes clean, and at 1.3 cm thin it slides into a drawer. The Hoffen KD-401 puts a steel plate on a 10 kg scale.
- Tempered glass. The KS-601 (black) and KS-501 (mint) have flat glass tops that clean in one wipe. Glass can break if it is hit or dropped, so set heavy pots down gently.
- Plastic with a bowl. The KD-819's bowl holds loose rice, flour and chopped vegetables and lifts off for washing.
Whatever the top, wipe the scale with a damp cloth and never hold it under the tap or put it in water. The KS-601, KD-819 and KS-305 are rated for use between 10 °C and 40 °C, so keep a kitchen scale away from the hob and out of the fridge.

How to check a kitchen scale at home
- Put the scale on a flat, firm table, switch it on and wait for 0.
- Weigh something whose weight you know: a test weight, or water measured in a lab-grade flask, since 500 mL at 20 °C weighs 499.1 g.
- Weigh the same item three times. The readings should agree within one step, 1 g on most kitchen scales.
- If readings wander, replace the batteries when the low-battery sign shows, clean the platform and check that the table is level.
- If an Omace scale still reads wrong every time, switch it fully off once and back on, press and hold the TARE key for about 5 seconds to open calibration mode, and place the weight the display asks for.

Selling food by weight needs a stamped scale
A kitchen scale is usually for your own kitchen. The Delhi Weights and Measures Department states that no weight or measure may be used for sale unless it has been verified and stamped, and it lists one year as the validity of an electronic scale's stamp.
Model approval comes first. The Hoffen KD-401 and KD-819 and the Venus KS-305 and KS-310 are Legal Metrology approved models, approved in accuracy class III. The approved 10 kg model has Min 20 g and e = 1 g. Each scale must still be verified and stamped before it is used for sale.
