A bathroom scale is a floor scale for checking your body weight at home, and it works by measuring the force your body presses onto its platform. A digital bathroom scale senses that force with strain gauge sensors and shows it in 100 g steps up to 180 kg; an analog one moves a needle with a spring, on a dial marked every 500 g.
What a bathroom scale is and why it has that name
A bathroom scale is a personal weighing scale that stands on the floor and weighs one person at a time. Omace's digital models weigh up to 180 kg, and its analog dial model up to 130 kg. The same product is sold as a personal weighing scale, a body weight machine or a weight machine for body.
The name comes from where it is kept. NHS England's guide to recording your weight asks for a firm, level floor for accurate readings and calls bathrooms ideal. The same guide advises weighing in little or no clothing, which is easiest in a bathroom.
A bathroom scale is different from a kitchen scale, which weighs food in grams, and from a balance, which compares a load with known weights. Omace lists every bathroom scale it makes in one category, priced ₹520–₹1,099 (October 2026).
How a digital bathroom scale works
A digital bathroom scale turns the force of your body into an electrical signal and the signal into a number. The whole cycle takes a few seconds:
- You step on. The scale switches itself on; there is no button to press.
- The sensors bend. Your weight presses the glass top onto metal sensors fitted with strain gauges, thin foil tracks whose electrical resistance changes as the metal bends by a tiny amount.
- The chip measures the change. The change in resistance gives a small voltage in proportion to the force. A chip amplifies it, converts it to a number and applies the calibration set at the factory.
- The reading locks. Once you stand still, the weight holds on the display, and the scale switches itself off a few seconds after you step off.
The Venus EPS-6399 digital bathroom scale works this way. It uses high precision strain gauge sensors under a tempered glass top, shows up to 180 kg in 100 g steps on a blue backlit LCD and runs on 2 AAA batteries for ₹549.
A digital scale sets its own zero. If you move it, tap the platform once and wait for 0.0 before you step on; Omace's instructions ask for this because the scale re-zeroes on its new spot.
How an analog bathroom scale works
An analog bathroom scale has no electronics. Standing on it pushes the platform down onto levers that stretch a spring, and a small gear turns that movement into a turn of the dial. The heavier the load, the further the spring stretches and the further the needle moves.
The Venus BS-9701 analog weighing scale works this way. It reads up to 130 kg on a dial marked every 500 g, has a metal body and never needs a battery, for ₹799.
An analog scale needs two habits. Turn the zero knob until the needle sits on 0 with nobody on the scale, and read the dial looking straight down, because reading from the side shifts the number.
Does a bathroom scale measure weight or mass?
A bathroom scale senses weight, the force of gravity on your body, and displays mass in kilograms. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) defines the kilogram as the SI unit of mass.
The NIST Guide to the SI explains the two meanings of the word. In science, weight is a force measured in newtons; in commercial and everyday use, weight usually means mass, measured in kilograms. A bathroom scale is calibrated so that the force it senses shows up as kilograms.

Most digital bathroom scales also switch to pounds. The NIST conversion table sets 1 lb at 0.4535924 kg, so 70 kg reads as about 154.3 lb.
How accurate is a bathroom scale?
A digital bathroom scale is accurate enough to track body weight at home. A 2013 BMC Public Health study of 61 home bathroom scales measured them against known test loads:
- Every digital scale read 0 kg before use; the dial scales read an average of 0.95 kg before they were zeroed.
- At a 10 kg load, digital scales varied by 0.1 kg on average and dial scales by 0.4 kg.
- At a 110 kg load, digital scales varied by 0.6 kg and dial scales by 1.2 kg.
- Accuracy did not change with the age of the scale.
The authors concluded that digital home bathroom scales give sufficiently accurate and consistent weights, and that zeroing the scale before each use improves accuracy further.
The 100 g step on the display is the smallest change the scale shows, not a promise that every reading is within 100 g. OIML R 76, the international recommendation for weighing instruments, keeps the display step (d) separate from the interval used to test an instrument (e).
In India, Legal Metrology model approval fixes these values for each approved model. The Venus EPS-6399 and EPS-1199 belong to the Venus EPS series and the Hoffen HO-18 to the Hoffen HO series. Each series is a Legal Metrology approved model in accuracy class III, and each approved 180 kg model has a minimum capacity (Min) of 1 kg and e = 50 g. The Venus BS-9701 dial belongs to the BS series, approved in accuracy class IIII, with Min 5 kg and e = 500 g on the approved 130 kg model.

What the number tells you, and what it does not
The number on a bathroom scale is your total body weight: fat, muscle, bone, water and whatever you have just eaten or drunk. A 250 ml glass of water adds about 250 g, which is why readings change through the day.
- BMI. The World Health Organization defines BMI as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, and puts adult overweight at a BMI of 25 or more. The Omace BMI calculator does the sum from your weight and height.
- Body composition. A smart scale passes a small current between metal pads under your feet and estimates body fat, muscle and water. Don't use the body fat function if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, or if you are pregnant.
- Not a diagnosis. A scale shows a number; a doctor reads weight changes together with other checks.
How to weigh yourself for readings you can compare
Comparable readings come from the same conditions every time. NHS England recommends these steps:
- Weigh at the same time of day, preferably in the morning, at regular weekly to monthly intervals.
- Use the same scale in the same place every time.
- Put the scale on a firm, level floor. The US CDC also asks for tile or wood rather than carpet.
- Wear little or no clothing and no shoes, and wear similar items each time.
- Stand with both feet on the scale and your weight evenly spread.
- Keep still until the number stops moving, then note it down. Zero an analog scale before you step on.
