Cabin bag size on flights from India is commonly capped at 115 cm, counting length, width and height together. The usual weight limit for that one bag is 7 kg in economy. Akasa Air, Emirates and Malaysia Airlines all state the 115 cm total on their own baggage pages, checked November 2026.

Cabin bag limits by airline, checked November 2026

This table comes from each airline's own page, opened on 5 November 2026. Limits change, so recheck yours on your ticket before you pack.

Malaysia Airlines Economy1 piece7 kg115 cm total (56 × 36 × 23 cm)1 personal item, inside the 7 kg

Air India Express says every fare includes a 7 kg cabin bag, and its fare pages give that weight without a size. Malaysia Airlines allows Business Class flyers two pieces totalling 14 kg, with 7 kg as the most for each piece.

Only airlines whose baggage pages opened and could be read on 5 November 2026 are in this table. IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet could not be confirmed that day, so their numbers are left out. Take their limits from your ticket or from the airline's own site.

What 115 cm means in real measurements

Airlines write hand baggage size in two ways: a total of length, width and height, or a fixed box. The total is 115 cm on all three boxes in the table, which is about 45 inches. The shape of each box differs, and that is where a bag can fail.

A bag 25 cm deep fits the Akasa Air box. The same bag is 3 cm deeper than the Emirates box and 2 cm deeper than the Malaysia Airlines box. A bag measuring 55 × 35 × 22 cm sits inside all three boxes, with a total of 112 cm.

BoxCentimetresInchesTotalBox volume
Akasa Air55 × 35 × 2521.7 × 13.8 × 9.8115 cm48.1 litres
Emirates55 × 38 × 2221.7 × 15.0 × 8.7115 cm46.0 litres
Malaysia Airlines56 × 36 × 2322.0 × 14.2 × 9.1115 cm46.4 litres
Fits all three55 × 35 × 2221.7 × 13.8 × 8.7112 cm42.4 litres

The inches and litres are worked out from the airlines' centimetres. Box volume is the outside of the box, so the packing space inside a real suitcase is smaller once the wheels, handle and shell take their share.

How to measure and weigh a cabin bag at home

Do this after packing, since a soft bag swells and its pockets stick out once full.

  1. Stand the packed bag on the floor and measure up to the top of the folded handle, with the wheels counted.
  2. Measure the width at its widest point, side pockets included.
  3. Measure the depth from the front pocket to the back of the bag.
  4. Add the three figures, then compare both the total and each single side with your airline's limit.
  5. Hang the bag from a luggage scale, lift it clear of the floor and read the vajan once the display settles.

The Hoffen HO-L-18 luggage measuring scale with tape does both jobs and costs ₹629. The Hoffen HO-L-7 suitcase weighing machine with 1 m tape costs ₹604. If you only need the weight, the Hoffen HO-L-8 portable weighing scale with hook costs ₹369. All three weigh up to 50 kg.

Seven kilograms goes quickly. A bag that weighs 2.5 kg empty leaves 4.5 kg for everything inside it, so weigh the empty bag once and remember the number.

What counts as a personal item

A personal item is the small second bag, and airlines treat it differently. Akasa Air's conditions of carriage allow one extra article up to 3 kg, as long as it fits under the seat in front. Its examples include these:

  • A handbag, purse or small waist pouch
  • A laptop in a slim bag, or a tablet in a sleeve
  • A camera or binoculars
  • An overcoat, a light jacket or a wrap
  • A folding umbrella or a neck pillow
  • Inhalers and small medication packs needed on board

Malaysia Airlines works the other way. Its personal item counts inside the 7 kg total, and it must fit 25 × 36 × 25 cm, or 86 cm in all. A heavy laptop bag therefore eats into your main bag on that airline.

Travelling with a baby adds a little room. Akasa Air gives an infant a separate 7 kg handbag, and Malaysia Airlines allows an infant amenities bag of up to 5 kg.

If the cabin bag is too big or too heavy

Akasa Air can move an oversized or overweight bag to the hold before take-off. The bag is tagged and comes back on the belt at arrival. If weight was the reason, you pay the excess baggage rate per kilogram, which the airline's excess baggage page lists at ₹800 at the airport on domestic flights and ₹1,500 from India on international flights.

The Air India Express fees and charges sheet lists a gate bag fee of ₹3,000 on domestic flights and ₹6,000 on international flights. It sells cabin weight in advance too: 3 kg more costs ₹2,100 on domestic flights, and 5 kg more costs ₹3,500. Those fees carry the sheet's own note that prices may vary but will not go above the table.

Space also decides the matter. Akasa Air accepts hand baggage subject to room in the overhead bins or under the seat, so a late boarder can lose the bag to the hold even when it is within the limit. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says to take lithium devices and batteries out first if your bag is taken at the gate.

Hand baggage rules for liquids, batteries and sharp items

Liquids

Emirates limits liquids, gels, aerosols, pastes and creams to containers of 100 ml or less. A larger container is refused even if it is only partly full. The containers go in one transparent re-sealable bag of up to 1 litre, and each customer gets one bag. IATA says these limits do not in principle apply to medicines, baby food or special diets, though it advises asking your airport.

Power banks and spare batteries

IATA says lithium-powered devices and spare batteries must only be carried in hand baggage. Akasa Air allows two spare lithium-ion batteries or power banks of up to 100 Wh each, with the terminals taped or insulated. Its conditions also say power banks may not be used or charged during the flight, and they may not go in the overhead bin.

Sharp items and tools

The Emirates dangerous goods policy bars knives and scissors with blades over 6 cm from the cabin. Razor blades, box cutters, drills and saws are on the same list. The longer list is in our guide to baggage allowance by airline, with excess fees.

Check-in baggage dimensions beside the cabin limit

Check-in luggage size is far more generous, which is why an oversized cabin bag usually just moves to the hold. Akasa Air allows 158 cm in total and 32 kg per bag. Malaysia Airlines sets the same 158 cm and 32 kg. Emirates allows 203 cm on weight-based routes and 150 cm on piece-based routes, with 32 kg as its single-bag limit on weight-based routes.

How to choose a bag for the cabin

  • Check the depth first. A depth of 22 cm fits all three boxes above, while 25 cm fits only one of them.
  • Compare empty weight. Every 500 g of bag is 500 g less to pack inside a 7 kg limit.
  • Measure the outside. Wheels and handles add to the height, so go by the outer size rather than the label.
  • Keep expansion zips closed. An open expansion zip adds depth and can take a carry-on bag past the limit.
  • Decide between hard and soft. A soft bag squeezes into a tight space, and a hard shell holds its shape. Our trolley bag chart in cm, inches and litres compares the materials.

Luggage scales from an Indian manufacturer

Omace Brands Private Limited manufactures weighing scales at G-29 RIICO Industrial Area, Bagru, Jaipur. The company has been in the weighing trade since 1994. Every scale is checked with certified test weights before dispatch. As a manufacturer, Omace Brands Private Limited holds ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, an EU MDR quality certificate, a CE certificate of compliance and a US FDA compliance certificate.

Hoffen luggage scales from Omace are made in India and weigh up to 50 kg. Retail purchases carry a 2-year warranty on manufacturing defects, and a scale that reads wrong is replaced under that warranty. Every Omace digital scale opens calibration mode when TARE is held for about 5 seconds, and the luggage scale calibration steps explain how to test one at home.

Before you leave for the airport

Find your cabin limit on your ticket, since the airline's figure for your fare is the one that counts. Pack the bag, measure all three sides and add them up. Then weigh it, and move anything heavy to your check-in bag or personal item if the airline allows. A small kanta at home settles the question before the counter does. Omace's luggage scales range from ₹369 to ₹629 and fit in the cabin bag for the flight back.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard cabin bag size?

A common limit is 115 cm in total, counting length, width and height. Akasa Air's box is 55 × 35 × 25 cm, Emirates uses 55 × 38 × 22 cm and Malaysia Airlines uses 56 × 36 × 23 cm. All three total 115 cm, checked November 2026.

How many kg is allowed in a cabin bag?

Economy flyers get 7 kg on Akasa Air, Air India Express, Emirates and Malaysia Airlines. Emirates Premium Economy allows 10 kg. Your ticket shows the limit for your fare, so check it before packing.

Is a 55 cm trolley allowed in the cabin?

Usually yes, if its width and depth keep the total within 115 cm. Depth is the side that catches people out: a 25 cm deep bag fits Akasa Air's box but is deeper than the Emirates and Malaysia Airlines boxes.

Can I carry a laptop bag along with my cabin bag?

On Akasa Air, yes, as one extra article of up to 3 kg that fits under the seat. On Malaysia Airlines, the personal item counts inside the 7 kg total, so the two bags share one limit.

Are cabin baggage rules the same for domestic and international flights?

Akasa Air uses the same 7 kg and 115 cm on both. Air India Express also gives 7 kg on domestic and international fares. Liquid limits of 100 ml apply on international security checks, so pack with those in mind.

Should a power bank go in the cabin bag?

Yes, power banks and spare lithium batteries belong in hand baggage only, according to IATA. Akasa Air allows two of up to 100 Wh each and bans using or charging them during the flight.

What are the IndiGo and Air India cabin bag limits?

Read them on your ticket or on the airline's own baggage page. Those pages could not be opened for this check on 5 November 2026, so their figures are not quoted here.
